I have had the privilege to work with a number of artists that have embraced high tech applications within their process. Through "word of mouth" they would approach me with a similar question..."Do you think it possible to...". Often, my favorite question!
Using technologies such as 3D CAD, 3D scanning, 3D Printing, CNC machining, Laser Cutting and Etching I found a way to assist the artist showcased within this site. It is important to mention that the final works are their property. I was an assistant to their process and have no ownership of any images depicting their final work.
Lisa Kirk is a performance artist that contacted me to develop props for her shows. The sample work shared is a set of wooden speakers and video camera on a tripod for her show "If You See Something...". Lisa provided an old speaker and video camera as inspiration for the project. The props are made from maple and poplar.
Most of the work with Matt was based upon the use of technology in the creation of his art. Laser etching and cutting was a significant portion of our work together. Using materials as paint the samples below include Formica, plastic, carpet, items from IKEA, sheetrock, plywood, roofing materials and many more!
The medium that Eugene worked with brought a different set of challenges in laser cutting. The silk and paper that he painted and dyed was likely the most fragile materials that were encountered for laser work. Many times the cut items would be sucked away through the vacuum table! After solving these challenges the results were very successful for him.
Sebastian's work in functional sculpture allowed a greater use of high end CNC milling technology. Simple looking items had to be 5-axis machined. Highly detailed items needed small, if not tiny, tooling and very long machine run times. As you can see, his use of the parts made for him create interesting, if not stunning results.
